In order to increase access to housing by low-income earners, the construction of about 600 affordable homes was
launched on Thursday in Batsinda, Kinyinya sector in Gasabo. It is a joint project by the City of Kigali, the Rwanda Social Security Board (RSSB), the Rwanda Housing Authority, the Rwanda Development Bank (BRD) and Horizon Construction company.
Addressing the media at the groundbreaking ceremony, RSSB director general Daniel Ufitikirezi said that the construction of houses is essential to achieve Vision 2020, which targets an increase of the urbanization rate from the current 17% to 35%.
Ufitikirezi assured that through continuous cooperation with other stakeholders, the goals of having affordable housing will be achieved. In this respect, the 600 homes will not be available to everyone, and those eligible will be determined based on their income (among other criteria).
The down-payment of 30% will be paid by the government, while BRD will offer a 20-year home loan.
"As we are striving for self-reliance, we want to make sure that Rwandans get affordable houses which are on standard and will not exceed Frw 30 million," Ufitikirezi said.
The construction phase begins next month starting with roads, and the estate is expected to be ready in two years.
