THE Tanzania Telecommunication Company Limited (TTCL) will spend a total of 3.4bn/- to complete mobile telecommunications and internet to 20 wards on Tanzania Mainland that have no connection by the end of next month.
Also, a total of 33 wards will benefit with
the Universal Communication Services Access Fund (UCSAF), which TTCL will receive a total of USD 6.026 million (9.8bn/-) to facilitate the second phase of the project.
This was revealed by TTCL Chief Commercial Officer in Zanzibar, Mr Hussein Nguvu, on behalf of the firm's Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dr Kamugisha Kazaura, during the launching of the new communication tower at Keigei village in Nachingwea, Lindi Region.
Mr Nguvu said that money from the fund will enable TTCL to provide mobile communications and internet to the villages that have had no such services since the introduction of mobile phone communication in the country.
He said that apart from promoting business and creating balance to all Tanzanians, the aim of the project is to enable Tanzanians to receive more information in markets, business and economy compared with the past.
"The government has great confidence and is satisfied with the performance of TTCL in providing telecommunication services to the people and even beyond the borders, especially in neighbouring countries.
"That is why we have been given mandate to operate the National Fibre Optic Cable network aimed at improving the country's economy under the Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology," said Mr Nguvu.
He explained that Kiegei villagers were enjoying the services of TTCL mobile phone services and internet and called on other villagers in the country to stay tuned as the services will reach them in the near future.
"Our aim is to cover all areas in the country with the services. We believe that through the UCSAF we will reach the goal by covering all rural areas that are still struggling to boost their economy and business in general," Mr Nguvu pointed out.
He said that since UCSAF started dishing out money to support the projects, TTCL has been the top bidder and has been in the forefront to provide telecommunications services cheaply.
The senior TTCL official said his company had succeeded in completing the Kiegei project up to the required quality and in accordance with the agreement by using its local skilled professionals to manage such projects.
Mr Nguvu said to realise the importance of the challenge, TTCL will continue to participate in the UCSAF tenders for the benefit of Tanzanians in the telecommunication industry.
The Minister for Home Affairs and Nachingwea Member of Parliament (MP), Mr Mathias Chikawe, thanked TTCL for the project and called on Kiegei villagers to use it for getting market information on their products, business and economy.
"This is great opportunity for you to grow economically; use the TTCL mobile phone and other services such as the internet to get information on your daily economic activities," Mr Chikawe advised the villagers, further cautioning against misuse.
