Nyamongo — OVER 300 youth from villages around North Mara Gold Mine have been given entrepreneurship skills aimed at enabling them to start income-generating activities.
The youth are now expected to identify and make good use of business opportunities found in the areas around the mine. They gathered at Ingwe secondary school to attend a two-day entrepreneurship training seminar on Friday and Saturday.
The training was part of ongoing efforts being made by the mine to transform the lives of local communities living in the surrounding villages.
It is further meant to discourage frequent intrusions in the mine area which is operated by African Barrick Gold (ABG), Tanzania's leading gold producer.
"They cannot continue with risky activities such as intruding into the mine because we believe the training will bring great changes," Mr Nikodemus Keraryo, a community engagement officer at ABG's North Mara Gold Mine site, said.
The participants came from seven rural villages surrounding the mine, according to him. "The aim is to equip the youth with entrepreneurship skills and make them understand and utilize business opportunities available within areas around the mine," Mr Keraryo added.
The seminar had a number of facilitators, he said. "Among other things, we have educated them on profitable entrepreneurship and proper use of funds," he said. The mining firm has pledged to finance youth with good business ideas after the training.
