There are unlimited opportunities for Tanzanian handcraft and textiles especially batik and carvings in South Africa that have not been exploited to the maximum, it has been revealed.

This was said on Monday by Chairperson Tanzania Handcraft and Textile Association (TAWOHAA) Anna Matinde during a visit of women entrepreneurs involved in cross border trade at her office.

The women who are in Dar es Salaam for five days with the support from UN women Tanzania and Tanzania Women Chamber of Commerce (TWCC) were urged to exploit the business opportunities available in South Africa for carvings, batiks and jewels because they are exceptional and attractive.

“I call upon all entrepreneurs - women and men engaged in handcrafts and textile making, especially carvings and batik to come with their samples to my office so that we can see how we can export them to South Africa and the UK,” she said.

She said she entered the South African market during the Easter Land Show held at Nasres –Soweto, South Africa in 1996.

Visitors from Austria, UK, USA, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town were impressed by the Tanzanian products especially wood carvings and purchased all the products, she said, adding: “I have many order for Tanzanian products which I cannot fulfill them singly.”
