Large percent of the deaf in Tanga have incomes below poverty line and have no assets to cushion themselves against shock; they are more vulnerable socially and economically, the statement said.

It is from this fact that deaf youth approached SIDO Tanga with a request of training the members of Tanzania Deaf Association (chavita) in Tanga and Korogwe Districts on soap making.

Sido in Tanga organised and conducted a training program to 30 members of chavita Tanga District and 22 members of chavita Korogwe District for three days in January, 2015.

Participants were trained on liquid soap, bar soap, disinfectant and hand washing soap. Trainers were from SIDO Tanga and Bahati Solution Company from Kibaha –Coast Region.

They were also advised to use the skills acquired effectively so that they can increase their sources of income.

Sido also asked them to utilise other services provided by the organisation such as marketing and information and financial services. On other hand, participants testified that they enjoyed the training and saw it as an opportunity to fight against poverty among them.

Meanwhile, SIDO in Dodoma under the sponsorship of the SNV Netherlands Development Organisation conducted training to 35 urban youths on how to make skins and hides products.

The SNV, through its OYE Project has been sponsoring these kinds of training to SIDO Dodoma leather Center.

The training aimed to build capacity of the participants on income generation as a way of reducing poverty in line with the broad goals of the National Strategy for Growth and Reduction of Poverty (Mkukuta).

The training was also a pilot program for the future launching of the Kizota Skins & Hides Training cum Production Centre which is expected to stimulate the growth of skins and hides sector in the country.
