VETA debuts machine to scare away animals and birds destroying crops

Vocational Education and Training Authority (Veta) has designed an animal and bird chasing machine to reduce destruction of crops on the farms.

Speaking recently in Ngongo village, Lindi Region, Veta instructor Emmanuel Bukuku said the machine can detect and fend off animals and birds 50 metres away from the farm.

“The machine automatically buzzes when the animal is 50 metres from the farm. The noise makes birds uncomfortable, hence run away from farms,” he said.

To prove its efficiency, he said, Veta officials conducted a two-month pilot study on paddy farms in Kibiti District, Coast Region.

“The animal and bird chasing machine proved successful in a pilot project that we staged at Kibiti district. Farmers were highly impressed with the technology,” he said.

Besides the animal and bird chasing machine, Veta has a number of innovated technologies including an unmanned military marine craft, a steriliser and culture unit for hospitals as well as automatic irrigation technologies.

The new unmanned military marine craft mounted with Radio Frequency Remote Control can be used in securing the country’s waters.

Bukuku said the unmanned military marine craft has the ability to take snapshots of anything on the sea because it has sensors that can sense objects. Through wireless internet, the craft can take photos and send them offshore,” he said adding that he craft has four cameras which are powered by the
solar
system to ensure they work properly.

Apart from military function, the craft can also be used for study purposes in military universities, higher learning institutions and technological colleges.

The Vocational Educational and Training Authority (Veta) was established by an Act of Parliament No. 1 of 1994 and is charged with broad tasks of coordinating, regulating, financing, promoting and providing vocational education and training in Tanzania.

The Vocational Training Act of 1974, which established the National Vocational Training Division, was replaced by the Vocational Educational and Training Act of 1994.

Veta’s mission is to ensure provision of quality VET that meets labour market needs, through effective regulation, coordination, financing and promotion, in collaboration with stakeholders and its vision is to be an excellent VET system that is capable of supporting national social economic development in a global context.
